So, I’ve been thinking of leaving the Mac OS/iOS world for PCs and Android stuff. Back in 2004 when I got my old Powerbook, I was blown away by how user friendly and rock-solid things were compared to the Gateway I was using.

Fast forward to now having a Mac Mini and an iPhone XR, I’m really underwhelmed by things. I feel like the machines aren’t as intuitive as they used to be and not as stable. If you open up more than one program on the Mini, it has trouble thinking, and the XR has made me think “Why am I spending so much on a phone?”

So I ask Oppo, got any words of wisdom? Have any of you gone back from Mac?

We made the switch from PC to mac a few years ago (forced due to software issues) and I have to say that for editing the MAC architecture is better. Its smoother and uses resources way smarter. That being said I’ m SHOCKED how crappy these computer have been. W e have 5 mac pros and ALL of them have had multiple recalls for expensive parts. We also have 6 macbook pros and they have all had some problem or another. For example, mine decides when it will and won’ t type the letter “e”.  As for phones i see ZERO reason to not do android these days.

A friend of mine who’s had Mac and PC told me that unless you create programs, art, or do a lot of video editing, stay with a Mac, but PC’s have become more solid for everything else.

I would say the other way around. Use adobe creative suite? MAC has the HP. Anything else? PC.

That being said my 7 year old XEON workstation works nearly as well as my brand new mac pro for heavy lifting everywhere except converting video files.  for some reason doing any conversion with resolve is SOOOOOOOOO slow on a PC.

I use both for my work, with the windows laptop being much newer. They both have their merits. For me, it would be difficult giving up the Apple Ecosystem. It’s so nice being able to sync everything so easily between iOS & Mac OS.

As far as phones go, I like the iPhone because it simply works. The camera is good, calling rarely fails, hardly crashes, and iMessage/Facetime is great. I initially had a bad experience with Android and understand they’ve come a long way, yet my brother has had to replace his Pixel 3 three times due to multiple issues.

Windows 10 is generally nice to use, don’t really have many complaints. It’s really the PC hardware that needed to catch up to Apple and it seems like it’s almost there.

This probably goes without saying, but fragmentation is still a thing with Android. So don’t compare Boost Mobile’s free LG whatever against an iPhone.

If you pack a Xeon processor into a tiny box, it’s gonna get hot!

My wife and kids switched to Android phones and all three refuse to go back to iPhones. I haven’t strayed away from PCs since I bought a PC in college. The last Apple computer I used was a Macintosh SE. :)

Sorry I’m not much help.

its a pretty big box and extremely well ventilated . The Mac Pro gets so hot that in the winter I created a duct out of the top that pointed the heat at me and rendered stuff when I wanted to warm up.

I don’t want to think about my phone or my computer more than I have to, which is why I like the Iphone... as others said it just works... whereas all the android phones I used to have died due to hardware related reasons. My iphone 4S still boots! Also, Apple’s processor is still the fastest mobile processor in the world.

As for computers, I think MacOS is way more user friendly than Windows, and while many apps don’t work on MacOS, you can always install a windows/linux partition and it won’t be a pain in the ass to do. Hardware wise apple computers have their ups and downs, My macbook pro died of an improperly made repair at an apple store, and the repair was because of a Known Bad Board. But, honestly it served me intensely for six years and there are brand new, expensive computers that were slower than mine.

Sounds like it’s time to deploy a render server and heat the entire house.

Just watch some louis rossman videos and youll get a goid sense ofcwhat apple does in business. I will never compute with fruit based systems unless wo rk forces me. Although ipad airs are nice, i have no use for it beyond internet surfing.

Staying pc. Cause i can fix crap myself but apple is fully investing in fighting the right to repair movement. Eff them.

I use Mac, windows, and even linux every day. I like them all but on the rare occasion that I buy a laptop for myself, it’ s a Mac. There are lots of reasons, but the touchpad is the kicker. I’ve never used non apple touch pad that I even kind of liked.

As far as phones go, I wouldn’t even consider an android. I’ve had a few and they’re more like a pocket PC to me.

I much prefer OSX to Windows 10. Windows 7 is decent enough. The hardware has got too pricey and compromised so I’m back in the windows camp for now. Maybe I’ll revisit Linux again- I was a fairly devoted user up until around 10 years ago (on mobile too!)

On mobile I can’t see me moving to Android any time soon. I find it irritating.

The past 5 yeas, there have been a staggering number of bad design decisions from an engineering and useability standpoint. The newest all-in-one mac pro is actually a great value on the hardware front when you add up the total package, but it has many issues with accessories like the VESA mount and repairability is still super suspect for s ome bits and pieces. Oh and there’s the macbook pro with the i9 that throttles down to near i7 speeds. They fixed it, a bit, by just patching the BIOS to run the fans more often.

I don’t know who calls what shot, but it feels like their engineering team is getting snubbed a bit with the most recent products.

To me it comes down to value for money. I don’t do anything particularly demanding on my computer or my phone, so PC/Android offers many affordable options. If you do heavy graphics work, image editing etc. I can see Macs being worth the price…but otherwise it’s just too much money for word processing, excel files, and the internet. Yes the macs are more polished and requires less DIY…it just works well out of the box, but I’d rather save some money and be able to tinker around and customize a bit more on my end.

I used to do a bit of graphics and video editing, but not anymore. I’ve just stayed with Apple stuff because I was already in the ecosystem.

But the macs aren’t great value even for fairly serious work loads. I just built up a new computer with photo editing in mind, i7-8700K, 32gb DDR4 memory, M2 drive (500gb), Water cooling and a motherboard that will let me push it a bit. Even with a new 27 inch 4K dell monitor with 100% sRGB and 99% adobe colour it was way less that an equivalent iMac. They’re pretty, but dollar for dollar PC is the way to go, not to mention you can always improve components as needed.

I grew up using Windows. My brother, who also frequents Oppo, grew up Mac. I bought a brand new MacBook Pro a few years back and traded it to someone on Craigslist for a Canon 7D camera body which, as it turns out, I sold to my brother... Missus and our three daughters all use Mac/iPhone, and I do not.

In my experience, with Windows, you’ll be raising the hood more often. But with Windows, you can raise the hood. More so with Android. I use Adobe Creative Suite somewhat heavily, and do a tiny bit of video editing. With regard to video editing, definitely pay attention to what Hammerhead is saying.

Also, regarding Windows: you can buy five-year-old Dell high end business grade computers and laptops with multi-core processors that do very well with Windows, particularly with SSD OS drives, for about 25% of what they cost new. Case in point: I just bought a Precision notebook with a Core-i7 quad proc and 32 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD for $450, in like-new condition. That’s about a $2,000 laptop. And it kicks absolute hind end.

Executive summary: for higher-end video editing, Hammerhead and others say Mac OS, and I’m in no position to quibble. But for (much) lower cost, and if you don’t mind having to patiently hack once in a while because Windows, then you can go Windows.

There’s my $0.02. Good luck, and let us know what you decide.
